Most people would seek a clinical physician if they are injured or noticed that they are not well physically and the over-the-counter remedies or products just won’t do. This is wise for so many apparent reasons.
But what about our mental and emotional health? Why do people come up with a host of justifications that explain away why seeking professional counseling isn’t necessary? How many times have you heard the saying, “I don’t need a shrink to tell me what’s wrong with me,” or the idea that in all cases, “time heals all wounds”? How often as a Christian have you felt that professional counseling isn’t essential for what you’re dealing with? After all, you have your Bible and prayer, right? Why is it that we often go to great measures to take care of our physical health but pay very little regard to our mental and emotional health?
It is certainly evident that not every circumstance requires professional counseling. There are many instances, however, that certainly do and it would be best suited that we know the difference. For example, you had a tough day at work dealing with an unruly customer. For this, you might not need counseling. But if you have lost a loved one(s) that has resulted in deep-seated trauma (as was our case) and has greatly and negatively impacted your day-to-day life, you might want to consider seeking professional counseling.
After we suffered our first miscarriage, we elected not to remain in solidarity. Availing ourselves to those that were willing to support us during such an unfamiliar and difficult time was in our best interest. But after we suffered our 2nd miscarriage, we knew and agreed that we would need to seek professional counseling. We are exceedingly grateful that God had given us the wisdom that led us to make that decision. We are also grateful for our amazing counselor who we continue to see even as this post is being written.
