I did not always aspire to be a Human Resource Professional. I actually wanted to be a lawyer and even took on Business Law as a major. Growing up as a child and watching all those court tv shows led me to think that a career in the field of Law was what I wanted to do. However, I realized during my freshman year in college that that was not my passion. I went and made an appointment with my guidance counselor to figure out what major would suit me best based on my interests.
After that conversation, he recommended that I attend the Society of Human Resources Temple University chapter meeting on campus to get an introduction to Human Resources. I would later become the Secretary of my college chapter in my junior year. By my senior year, I was nominated to be the President of the SHRM Chapter where I gained some great leadership skills that would prepare me for my future in Human Resources.
So how did I know Human Resources was for me?
I enjoyed learning about it and helping others with resume and interview skills; it didn’t feel like a burden, and it allowed me to make an impact just by helping someone else with their career. Human Resources has so many facets to it such as Labor Relations, Compensation, HR Business Partner, Diversity & Inclusion, Benefits, Talent Management, Training, and the list goes on. Through the years, I have learned which areas interest me the most and spaces that wouldn’t be considered as areas of strength.
If I didn’t take that leap to switch majors, I am not certain where I would be right now. I may have been making lots of money but might have been overworked or unfulfilled.
