After 3 years of dating and many wondering when I (Rodney) was going to pop the question, the time had finally arrived. Kristina had always desired a proposal that was creative and well thought out. No pressure right?
First things first, I bought the ring. Secondly, I had to ask her parents for the blessing to marry their daughter… one of the most nerve racking things that I ever had to do. Thankfully, they liked me, approved, and were excited.
At the time that I called Kristina’s parents on the phone to marry their daughter, Kristina was out of the country on a cruise with one of her friends. This left me with the perfect opportunity to plan this epic proposal. I called another married couple who are dear friends of ours to stage a potluck/game night at their place. It would appear as if this event was planned by them but I was the mastermind behind it all. The plan was to gather, eat, play games, and ultimately propose to her through one of the games.
Kristina had returned from her cruise and we went out to dinner that weekend. While at dinner, our friend sent a mass text inviting everyone including us to this potluck/game night at their place. Kristina was the first to see it and read to me the text. Of course, I had to play it off and even checked my calendar to see if I would be available.
The day had come and boy was I nervous all day long. So Kristina would not see the ring box through my jeans pocket, I handed the box to my friend to retrieve it from him later. Through the night, nothing seemed unusual. We talked, we ate, we laughed, and played games. Most of the time, it was a battle of the sexes. In order for this proposal to work, it had to be couples versus couples.
Oh, and by the way, I’m going to need that ring back but how do I get it back with Kristina present? Thankfully, she steps out to use the restroom. YES!!!! That was the opportunity I needed to get the ring back. Everyone who was there (besides Kristina of course) continued to play along and she had no clue.
Finally, the moment had come. We were playing a game called Taboo– couple versus couple. Throughout the night, one of our friends would periodically grab her phone and start recording so that it wouldn’t seem odd during the proposal.
It was now our turn. The plan was to go along with the first two cards on the deck but the third would be the surprise. It went like this:
Rodney: If you’re always falling down, you’re considered…
Kristina: Clumsy (correct)
Next Card
Rodney: It’s a type of liquid, it’s warm, you can get it at a restaurant, it’s a food…
Kristina: Soup (Correct)
Rodney: It’s shiny, it has stones in it…
Kristina: A ring… an engagement ring
Rodney: Usually a guy would ask a woman a question…
Kristina: Will you marry me?
Throughout this whole time, Kristina was in ultra-competitive mode and had no idea what was going on!
Rodney: Yes and this is called a….
Kristina: Proposal
Rodney: Yes and uhhhh…. Let me try this another way.
I put the Taboo box down and reached for some flowers that were previously positioned behind the sofa. Kristina still didn’t know what was going on until she saw the flowers and was shocked! I then proceeded to express my love for her and got down on one knee and asked her to marry me. And of course, she said YES!
The night could not have gone any better. It was all staged by a great group of friends. Most importantly, the love of my life agreed to spend the rest of her life with yah boy!
